Matt Hardy won his first major singles title at yesterday’s Bound For Glory pay-per-view, defeating both the reigning champion EC3 and Drew Galloway to become the new TNA World Heavyweight champion. This is his second title in TNA having previously won the Tag Team titles with his brother Jeff.
“For all the people that have supported & believed in my quest to become the TNA World Champion, thank you,” Matt wrote on his Twitter, also posting a video explaining how “dreams do not expire.” He then wrote that he’s celebrating two wins today, the TNA title and his two year wedding anniversary.
While he held several titles throughout his career, Matt never won “the big one” during his WWE tenure and was only given the WWE’s version of the ECW title as a “major” title. He had a total of 13 title reigns in the WWE winning the Tag Team, Cruiserweight, U.S., European, and the Hardcore championships.
Hardy joined TNA in January 2011 but his time in the company was cut short eight months later after he was suspended and later released following a DUI arrest. In July 2014 he returned to the company to reform The Hardys with his brother and has remained there ever since.
