Ring Of Honor had a date set to debut in Madison Square Garden later this year in September but now MSG have pulled out of the agreement after WWE interfered to prevent ROH from running at The Garden.
WWE has some sort of handshake agreement with Madison Square Garden to not allow any professional wrestling events there, an agreement that dates back to several decades when the late Vince McMahon Sr was running things.
The Garden has not hosted a wrestling event which is not WWE in over 50 years and while the company ran several shows throughout the years there, it’s now only doing once or twice a year. The events that WWE hosts at The Garden are also non-televised live events and pay-per-views or television shows are no longer held there due to sky-high fees and union issues.
Ring of Honor COO Joe Koff told PWInsider.com that it was WWE who blocked their MSG debut and the officials at The Garden are refusing to give them a new date.
“We had a deal with Madison Square Garden and they then told us they were backing out after communications from the WWE. We are not able to get any other dates in any kind of discussion,” Koff said. “I’m expecting that our lawyers will be contacting all the parties involved and the best we can hope is that we can find a resolution, so we can bring the kind of energy and excitement that ROH and our partner New Japan to a bigger audience and to bigger arenas and to the fans of New York City.”
The last WWE pay-per-view held at MSG was Survivor Series in 2011. WWE returns to the location for a non-televised event on July 7 which will feature the return of The Undertaker at MSG for the first time in eight years.
