Review: The World Of The Rock book by DK

DK Publishing’s latest WWE book is titled The World Of The Rock and it’s a comprehensive look at the career of The Great One himself, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. It’s written by Steven Pantaleo, who has a few WWE books under his belt already, and has a total of 160 pages and comes in hardcover format.

The large book has four main sections: 1) Who Is The Rock? 2) The Rock’s Early Years 3) The People’s Champion 4) The Great One. Each section is divided into multiple categories where a lot of text, and photos, illustrate the journey of Dwayne Johnson, from his football years all the way through his boom in professional wrestling, and ultimately taking over Hollywood.

WHO IS THE ROCK?

As most of you know, Dwayne Johnson comes from a very large wrestling family because of his ties with the Anoa’i family. The book details who the family members in the wrestling business are and there’s also a cool family tree to show you who is married to who and which kids belong to which couple. Needless to say, the combined family tree is quite…big!

This first section also has career highlights of the most electrifying man in sports entertainment, starting from 1991 to 2017. Several pictures accompany the many dates listed which end with Johnson getting his Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

The last part of this section involves a look at his many catchphrases that wrestling fans love to hear from him and his signature moves and the many people who were on the receiving end of them.

EARLY YEARS

The second section of the book starts with The Rock’s football career and transitions to his wrestling training, where you can read comments from Pat Patterson, Tom Prichard, and Jim Ross, who ended up giving him his first WWE deal. There’s also a cool section where you can see the different illustrations of how Rocky Maivia was supposed to look like.

His early years were mainly dominated by a few big things: Joining the Nation of Domination, the rivalry with D-Generation X, joining the Corporation, and the feud with Mankind. All of these are featured extensively with a lot of photos as well for a nice trip down memory lane.

THE PEOPLE’S CHAMPION

Perhaps The Rock’s best moments came during the Attitude Era. It’s the period which catapulted WWE to stratospheric success and carved The Rock into the Superstar that he is today. This section of the book mainly concentrates during that period and his iconic rivalry with Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Other topics covered in this section are the 2000 Royal Rumble, his third and final WrestleMania match against Austin, his rivalries with The Big Show, Triple H, Booker T, Hulk Hogan, The Hurricane and the biggest one against John Cena among many others.

There’s also a look at his WrestleMania record and statistics and the several hilarious promos he cut throughout the years that left fans laughing in stitches.

THE GREAT ONE

The fourth and final section of this book features many quotes from his adversaries and peers throughout the years, unclosing the likes of John Cena, Triple H, Daniel Bryan, Rikishi, Stephanie McMahon, Trish Stratus, The Hurricane, Michael Cole, The Bella Twins, and many others.

There’s also a look at his several returns to WWE and a timeline of every championship reign he had through his WWE career. The last category is about some of his Hollywood movies and his success over there.

Overall this book is pretty good if you’re a fan of The Rock. It has a lot of content and as much pictures as there is text. The book will be released on October 2, 2018 for a retail regular price of $24.99. You can pre-order it on Amazon.com for just $16.50. There’s also an eBook format of the book priced at $12.99. It’s available on Amazon Kindle and Google Play Store.
