UFC 250: Nunes defeats Spencer, other fights on card just as thrilling

MMA fans celebrated last June 6 after Nunes defended her featherweight title against Spencer via a unanimous decision. Her victory made her the first fighter in UFC history to defend two titles from different weight classes.

Aside from the main event, other fight cards proved to be just as exciting. With unexpected wins and favorites losing the game, fights ending in less than two minutes, and intense fighting, UFC 250 thrilled experts, fans, and bettors.

Main event: Nunes wins over Spencer

Amanda Nunes made history by defending her two titles from two different weight classes. She put her featherweight title on the line against the rising UFC star, Felicia Spencer. Still, Nunes defeated Spencer via a unanimous decision after five rounds, with scores of 50-44, 50-44, and 50-45.

Nunes started strong in the fight, exacting strikes towards Spencer on various parts of the latter’s body. Spencer never had a chance to prove that she could beat Nunes during the fight, but she held up until the fifth round.

Amanda “Lioness” Nunes credited her victory to being on top of her game and being sharp. She said that she studied and analyzed what Spencer is capable of. Spencer’s loss earned her an 8-2 record.

Nunes weighs 135 pounds and has not lost a fight for the last five years. The last defeat she experienced was in 2014 against Cat Zingano. Since then, she had a ten consecutive winning streak, earning a victory against Shayna Baszler, Miesha Tate, Valentina Shevchenko, Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm, and Cris Cyborg. Nunes is known to be the woman who defeated Ronda Rousey within 48 seconds.

On the other hand, Spencer won the Invicta FC featherweight title in November 2018 and later joined the UFC in May 2019. She won her first UFC fight via the first-round submission against the ex-Invicta champion, Megan Anderson. This fight led her to fight against Cyborg. Unfortunately, she did not win this match.

Nunes wasn’t the only one who celebrated her win. Bettors from these states were also ecstatic that the fighter they bet on won the fight. Many bettors weren’t surprised with the result, with Nunes being the favorite and having a -650 odds value.

Bantamweight

Plenty more fights were enjoyed in UFC 250 other than the main event. For the bantamweight division, the fight between Assuncao vs. Garbrandt, Sterling vs. Sandhagen, and Wineland vs. O’Malley was also anticipated by fans.

Garbrandt vs Assuncao

Former UFC Men’s Bantamweight Champion, Cody Garbrandt, won via knockout during the 2nd round against Raphael Assuncao. Round 2 started with Assuncao trying to spin right as Garbrandt jumped on him, kicking almost at the same time. Assuncao kicked Garbrandt’s inside leg, but the latter planted a right overhand punch on the former’s face. With a low leg kick, Assuncao was knocked out.

Garbrnadt was a favorite among the bettors because of the preciseness of his punches. His win in the fight against Dominick Cruz left a good impression on MMA fans. On the other hand, Assuncao lost two fights in a row. However, he is known for his precise and advanced striking ability(68% striking defense), which makes bettors usually favor him.

Sterling vs Sandhagen

The bantamweight bout of Sterling and Sandhagen is considered to be the most competitive fight of UFC 250. Sterling made a statement after choking Sandhagen during the first round of the fight. When the fight began, Sterling immediately attacked Sandhagen with quick strikes. Sterling locked a body triangle until he choked Sandhagen once they were on the ground, forcing Sandhagen to tap out.

Both Sandhagen and Sterling have a good background and fighting history. This fight turned exciting because of Sterling’s black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Sandhagen’s passion for making a name in the bantamweight ranks.

Wineland vs. O’Malley

Sean O’Malley made his comeback with a bang, winning a knockout against Eddie Wineland during the first round of the match. O’Malley was bouncing inside the cage but was aggressive right from the start. The fight happened in less than two minutes.

Wineland fired a right punch at O’Malley. O’Malley was quick to get back and kicked Wineland’s midsection. He made another kick before punching Wineland’s jaw. O’Malley made a spinning head kick, but Wineland was able to avoid it. However, O’Malley managed to punch Wineland on the jaw, earning him a knockout.

Welterweight: Magny wins via unanimous decision

Neil Magny won over Anthony Rocco Martin via a unanimous decision after three rounds, with the scorecards reading 29-28, 30-27, and 30-27. Magny led the game during round 1 and landed cleaner attacks than Martin. In the second round, Martin was leading the fight. During round three, Magny was pushing forward, making clear strikes.

Neil Magny’s last fight was in 2018 before winning a unanimous decision victory against Li Jingliang in UFC 248. He is known for his rangy kickboxing and strong clinch. Martin, on the other hand, is also a good kickboxer. His career took a high when he won against Ramazan Emeev, just after losing against Demian Maia.

Takeaway

UFC 250 was one exciting telecast showcasing the skills and strengths of each fighter. Many MMA fans looked forward to the main fight between Nunes and Spencer, and many were not disappointed with the result. Not only that, but fans were also excited to witness other matches on different fight cards. After UFC 250, both athletes and enthusiasts are now gearing up for the upcoming UFC 251.
