Why Mike Tyson’s return could be bad for boxing

Boxing is undoubtedly one of the most popular combat sports in the world. This is a sport which has millions of fans around the world today. Of course, the advent of TV and the internet has contributed to its popularity. And as long as the sport has been played, people have been betting on it too. Thanks to the internet, you can now place bets on boxing and various other sports from the comfort of your home. Also, online betting operators offer the chance to wager on slots and various other casino games. What’s more, players can take advantage of free spins no deposit NZ bonus and various other offers that can assist them in optimising their payouts.

There are literally thousands of boxers out there, but some of them are more popular and skilled than others. One of these greatest boxers of all time is Mike Tyson. After a boxing career of 20 years, Tyson retired from professional boxing in 2006.

Fans have forgotten how bad Tyson looked at the back end of his career: Johnny Nelson

Recently, the 53-year-old announced a desire to do some exhibition bouts for charity and has left fight fans stunned with some stunning training videos.

While some experts believe that Tyson has the potential to give the current lineup of heavyweights a run for their money, many others believe that he should stay away from boxing for his own good.

Former world cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson believes that fans have forgotten how bad Tyson looked at the back end of his career.

“It’s about the pace, that timing, that fast reaction. Once you’ve had the time to reflect and assess, you think ‘I could do that’. But it’s our mind playing tricks with us, because when you get into the ring and when you come against a young boxer who’s not as good as you, technically, but has higher pace than you, he will do you every day of the week,” Nelson told Sky Sports.

“The world has seen Mike Tyson hitting headlines on the pads. And everyone’s like ‘oh my gosh, he’s the don.’ We’re remembering the good times but we’re forgetting the back end of his career when the body didn’t switch as quick as it used to. The body didn’t react as quickly as it used to.”

What Tyson’s comeback tells about modern boxing

Although heavyweight boxing is not the big deal it once was, it’s quite strong now. Until recently, Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Deontay Wilder ruled the 200+ pound class with unbeaten records. Joshua’s knockout at the hands of Andy Ruiz and Fury’s dismantling of Wilder changed all that, but it won’t be wrong to say that these three are still worth some big fights between them.

But the thing is that boxing is just not what it was. It’s easy to look back at the 1980s with fondness because boxing was a more popular sport at that time.

The problems with modern days boxing are sky-high pay-per-view prices, a lack of big fights, poor officiating, and more. In reality, the past decade has seen the popularity of the sport suffer as a result.
