Tony Khan explains how and why they’re using Winter Is Coming for Dynamite

Tomorrow’s Dynamite will be using the Winter is Coming tagline, promoting the show as a special event with Dynamite’s biggest-ever match between Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega for the AEW World title.

But as you might have heard, or if you’re a Game of Thrones fan, Winter is Coming was the series premiere episode name of Game of Thrones back in 2011. The term is also the motto of House Stark, which is spoken several times in the episode and in the series.

In his conference call with reporters today to promote tomorrow’s broadcast, AEW President Tony Khan said that he got permission from WarnerMedia to use the term. The term is trademarked by HBO, which is owned by Warner, which owns TNT as well.

Khan described the term as a big expression and while he never saw Game of Thrones before, he knows it’s big in pop culture so that’s why they decided to go ahead with it…plus it’s also winter which made sense too.

Khan said that more themed-episodes of Dynamite will be coming this month, including for Christmas and New Year’s.
