Io Shirai’s 304-day reign as NXT Women’s champion came to a screeching halt last night on the first night of Takeover: Stand & Deliver as Raquel Gonzalez defeated her in the main event to take the crown.
The 30-year-old Texan, who has been signed to a WWE deal since 2016, is enjoying her best year with the promotion and her association with Dakota Kai lifted her stock and got more screen time over the past 12 months than ever before.
Gonzalez was also the one who beat Shirai at WarGames last year, winning the match for her team which also included Candice LaRae, Dakota Kai, and Toni Storm.
This is Gonzalez’s second title in NXT after a few weeks ago she was awarded the NXT Women’s Tag Team championship along with Kai after they won the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament. Their reign lasted under two hours though as later in the broadcast they lost them to Blackheart and Moon.
MSK also won the vacant NXT Tag Team titles last night, beating the Grizzled Young Veterans and Legado Del Fantasma in a triple threat tag team match.
MSK won the Dusty Classic this year but unfortunately never got their shot at the titles as Wes Lee suffered a broken hand and was unable to compete. Last night’s match was their first one since the tournament finals.
The duo of Wes Lee and Nash Carter, formerly known as The Rascalz in Impact Wrestling, have been with WWE since the beginning of 2021.
