Wrestling world reacts to the passing of “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff

The wrestling world reacted on social media to the passing of WWE Hall of Famer “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff who died yesterday at the age of 71.

“WWE is saddened to learn that WWE Hall of Famer ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Paul Orndorff has passed away at the age of 71. WWE extends its condolences to Orndorff’s family and friends,” said a tweet from WWE. WWE also opened Monday Night Raw with an in-memoriam graphic.

All Elite Wrestling, Impact Wrestling, and the NWA also released separate statements to honor Orndorff.

“AEW joins the wrestling world in mourning the passing of a true legend, ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Paul Orndorff. Our thoughts are with his family, his friends and his fans,” tweeted AEW after the news was published. Impact Wrestling said, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of pro wrestling legend ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Paul Orndorff. We offer our sincere condolences to his friends and family,” while the NWA wrote, “The NWA sends it condolences to the friends & family of the legendary Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff. We’ll forever be grateful for the memories and admire the legacy he leaves us with.”

One of Orndorff’s biggest rivals in the WWF, Hulk Hogan, wrote that he “got slammed” with the news. “RIP my brother, love you and thank you for always making me fight for everything in our matches, heaven just got even more Wonderful,” Hogan wrote.

“So sorry to hear of the passing of Paul Orndorff aka Mr. Wonderful aka The Brandon Bull,” Ric Flair wrote. “Great guy, legit tough! He was another amazing athlete that I had the pleasure of wrestling an hour for the NWA championship on many occasions!”

Orndorff’s boss in WCW, Eric Bischoff, wrote that he always enjoyed working with Paul. “He was a good friend to my son Garett and I and we shared some memorable times away from the wrestling business. Rest easy my friend.”

The Iron Sheik described Orndorff as “the toughest.” In his usual all caps tweets, Sheik said, “WE TRAIN TOGETHER. WE RIDE TOGETHER. YOU WERE EXCELLENT BUBBA. I AM SO SAD I LOVE YOU FOREVER REST IN PEACE.”

The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase shared the locker room with Paul Orndorff for many years and said that his heart and prayers go out to his family. “Great wrestler and many great memories,” DiBiase said.

DiBiase’s former sidekick, Virgil, also had glowing remarks for Mr. Wonderful. “Man the compliments I got from this dude were abundant. He always helped me w/ my body always helped me grow as a talent always spoke to me about the business. One of the toughest guys I’ve ever met. Really sad to see this. I love you Paul.”

AEW commentator Tony Schiavone called many matches of Orndorff throughout his career in WCW. “We have lost a true superstar in wrestling. He was a tremendous performer & trainer at the WCW Power Plant. Rest In Peace, my friend,” Schiavone said while fellow commentator Jim Ross described Orndorff as a true man’s man and a stud.

“I’m so sorry to learn of the passing of Paul Orndorff. As a fan, I loved watching him. As a wrestler, I loved working with him,” tweeted Mick Foley. “He brought intensity and believability to every match and promo. Truly one of the all-time greats.”

NXT General Manager William Regal said he was absolutely heart broken to hear of the passing of his friend. “He help me so much when I first arrived in the US and taught me so much on how to adapt my style to fit in to the US. A true great.”
