Former WCW and WWE referee Mickie Jay passes away

Mike Mooneyham of The Post and Courier reported in a tweet today that former WCW and WWE referee Mickey Jay, real name Mickie Jay Henson, passed away yesterday. The cause of death was complications from a COVID-related pneumonia.

The 59-year-old started his career in 1987 and worked for Florida Championship Wrestling before he joined WCW. Jay refereed in WCW from 1992 up until it was sold to WWE in 2001 and then moved to WWE in 2005 where he was the head referee for Smackdown.

In 2008, Jay was diagnosed with Mantle cell lymphoma and was told he didn’t have long left but was able to beat cancer. He was released from WWE in early 2009.
