How to make a training simulator using a linear actuator

Linear drives have become indispensable helpers in both production and daily life. They perform hundreds of operations to solve people’s routine tasks. Furthermore, you may use them and not even notice them. They will undoubtedly come in handy if you want to build something with your hands, including a training simulator.

Linear drives are an excellent choice when you need to tilt, lift, tension, or move different weights or objects. They come in different sizes and materials.

They are energy efficient, have a long service life, and require little or even no maintenance at all. You may find the most common modifications by the link, providing solutions that you may need for the construction of a training simulator.

What Can You Make With a Linear Actuator?

The linear drive is a device that converts rotational movements into a motion in a straight line. As a rule, one uses a direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC) electric motor to do that.

What are Different Types of Linear Actuators?

When smooth and precise motion is required, electric drives are preferred over other types of actuators. They are all interchangeable and can be customized based on the needs and application of the customer. The following are the most common types of linear actuators:

  • Parallel (straight inline). They are effective but slightly noisy;
  • 90-Degree. They are less efficient but quieter;
  • Build-in. They are appropriate for limited spaces and is noisy;
  • They are ideal for mechanical synchronization;
  • They are quiet, have a higher cost, are cost-effective, and more productive;
  • They move in a straight line without the use of an external pipe;
  • Electrical columns with adjustable height. They are widely used in industry, medicine, and ergonomic devices, such as a standing desk.

How to Select the Right Linear Actuator?

To select the best actuator, you must first determine the following parameters:

  • The load;
  • The speed;
  • Load coefficient;
  • Available free space;
  • Operation environment.

How to Make a Standing Desk Simulator Using a Linear Actuator?

Despite their numerous benefits, standing desks are still an expensive option for many customers. Before investing in an industrial desk, one should weigh all of the pros and cons and even try to build a training simulator on their own.

You are unlikely to make an adjustable table at the level of a store sample. However, even a handcrafted training simulator can help you appreciate all of it benefits.

Materials

You can build a table from scratch or with the help of semi-finished components. If you choose the second option, you will need:

  • A desktop;
  • Screws;
  • A screwdriver;
  • A standing desk frame powered by electricity (or mechanically);
  • A cable box;
  • Brackets;
  • Sockets;
  • A pencil;
  • A ruler;
  • A roulette;
  • An electric fret saw.

Procedure

After you have gathered all of the necessary tools, it is time to build your training simulator:

  • Prepare the desktop (if necessary, cover with finish);
  • Turn the tabletop over and determine the attachment points for the desk frame supports;
  • To ensure the table’s stability while in use, secure the frame to the desktop;
  • Add sockets and other accessories;
  • Turn the table. Check again that the table will not wobble while in use and can support your computer;
  • Check the adjustment function.

If you choose a training simulator with an automatic lift, it is preferable to put it close to power outlets. The best option is to put it near the wall, but not too close to it. Of course, such a workstation is appropriate not for everyone. That is why it is critical to evaluate how it works and how comfortable you are with it before buying an expensive standing desk.
