The three biggest WrestleMania betting upsets in history

Since first hitting the airwaves in 1985, WrestleMania has grown to be the most popular wrestling promotion in the world. Across its 38 editions, wrestling fans have been treated to some enthralling upsets, including plenty that has defined the betting odds. We look at the three biggest WrestleMania betting upsets across its history.

Zach Ryder in WrestleMania 32

Six years ago, by far the greatest upset of WWE WrestleMania history occurred when Zach Ryder won WrestleMania 32.

Betting odds for Ryder to win were astronomically long, sitting at a money line of +3300 just before the event began. This event was meant to be all about the feud that Kevin Owens had going on with basically everyone else in the fight. Owen, Zayn, Ziggler, and Miz were aligned and would be up against Stardust, Sin Cara, and Ryder, who was a late replacement for the event. Because Ryder was a replacement just weeks before WrestleMania 32, and fans were focused on clashes between Owens and Zayn and Ziggler against the Miz, the wrestler was completely overlooked.

However, Zach Ryder came out of obscurity and defeated Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Stardust, and Sin Cara at odds of +3300 to become king of the WWE. This success was short-lived, as the very next evening he lost to the Miz.

Carmella in WrestleMania 35’s Women’s Battle Royale

Before the Covid-19 pandemic struck and deprived WrestleMania of crowds, Carmella pulled off one of the franchise’s biggest ever upsets.

Fighting in the Women’s Battle Royale at WrestleMania 35, Carmella was at odds of +1500 to win the event. She had been a relative unknown prior to the event, but with WrestleMania 35 being held in New York, Carmella was a hometown favorite. The daughter of a wrestler herself, Carmella outplayed her opposition and scored a huge upset win in front of adoring fans, shocking punters who hadn’t considered her due to the long odds offered at the bookies.

With the next WrestleMania less than four months away already, it’s worth considering who the hometown underdogs are in the event—often the WWE will give the win to one of these for the crowd’s enjoyment. Brock Lesnar Ending the Undertaker’s Streak

While Brock Lesnar’s defeat of the Undertaker may not have been the biggest upset of all-time in terms of betting odds, it certainly still shocked wrestling fans around the world.

Up until WrestleMania 30, the Undertaker had been on a 21-fight undefeated streak. Many believed that this was going to continue for the duration of his career—they certainly weren’t expecting Brock Lesnar to defeat him, given that the former UFC champion had recently lost to John Cena and Triple H. At odds of +1100, betting on Lesnar defeat the Undertaker was a real shot in the dark.

And yet, that’s exactly what happened. Lesnar ended the Undertaker’s 21-fight winning streak, and in doing so, began an era of dominance that lasted for years to come.
