United States and Intercontinental titles back in the spotlight at WrestleMania

One thing that has improved under the Triple H regime since his takeover in July is the use of the secondary WWE titles. Often overlooked, both the Intercontinental and the United States titles will return to being defended at WrestleMania this weekend.

And what a difference a year makes. Last year, Finn Balor was the United States champion and was relegated to being part of the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Not at WrestleMania, but on the Smackdown the night before. Balor didn’t win, and the title didn’t mean much. But tomorrow, the United States title, currently held by Austin Theory, will get to kick off WrestleMania in a high-profile match against none other than John Cena.

Cena has a chance to tie Ric Flair’s record of six United States title reigns if he manages to beat Theory tonight.

The Intercontinental title was defended during Mania weekend last year, but again on Smackdown and not on the main show. Ricochet was the champion at the time and was stuck in a meaningless triple threat match against Humberto and Angel Garza.

This year it’s going to be a banger after banger after banger after banger as IC champion Gunther defends against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre in another triple threat match that could be one of the best matches on the whole two-night card.
