Paul Heyman discusses Mania ending and the rise of Owens and Zayn

In a fascinating 15-minute interview with Ariel Helwani for BT Sport, Paul Heyman discussed the WrestleMania main event, Owens and Zayn, and the WWE sale.

Speaking about Cody coming up short at WrestleMania, he said that he likes the fact that now everyone walks in to each event thinking this is Roman’s last title defense and people keep paying to see Roman lose.

He put over Cody for the response he received on Raw, which was louder than last week and louder than ever before because Cody didn’t disappoint the fans, Roman Reigns did. Roman was the one who took it away from Cody and the audience and now the audience appreciates how close Cody came to winning and they “know” the next one will be the one.

He described the whole thing as “storytelling at its very best” and Cody’s redemption, coming back to get what was taken from him and the defeat he didn’t deserve, will be even bigger.

Asked if WrestleMania was the perfect night to pull the trigger, Heyman said that he heard it all along, and he heard it when Reigns took on Cena, Brock, Drew, Owens, and Sami.

He said whatever the biggest box office will be will determine the next move. They didn’t have to do Cody vs Roman on Raw because the Crypto.com Arena was already sold out and they’re in the business of selling tickets.

So when is it going to happen? “When the people will be at their peak of the desire to see Cody challenge again for the championship to such a degree that they’re willing to pay the most money to see it happen,” responded Heyman.

The wiseman smiled when the topic of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens came up, seemingly very proud to play a part in their rise to the top.

“A year ago he was bodyslammed by Wee Man, running into a five-foot hand, and losing to Johnny Knoxville at WrestleMania,” Heyman said of Sami.

But because Sami went with them and against them, he is now one of the biggest wrestling stars on the planet.

The same can be said for Kevin Owens, who Heyman said is hotter now this year than he ever was last year when he main evented night one of WrestleMania against Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Heyman also talked about the WWE sale to Endeavor and cut a promo on Conor McGregor, who earlier tweeted that he would break Heyman’s jaw in three different places!
