New interim AEW World champion to be crowned at Forbidden Door

A new interim AEW World champion will be crowned at the Forbidden Door pay-per-view after it was revealed last night that CM Punk is out injured and will require surgery.

Punk, despite his wishes, is not vacating the title on the orders of AEW President Tony Khan. But instead of having no champion, a compromise was found and an interim champ will be decided on June 26.

A battle royal will be kicking things off this coming Wednesday on Dynamite and the winner of that match will then go on to face Jon Moxley in the main event.

The winner of that match will then face a yet to be named opponent at Forbidden Door where whoever wins that match will be crowned the interim AEW World champion.

Punk was set to take on Tanahashi at the show and with all matches being AEW vs NJPW talent, it looks like one of NJPW’s roster will be getting a shot at the AEW gold.

Wardlow was ranked #1 by AEW in the official weekly rankings chart on Wednesday but another chart was published yesterday, with Jon Moxley shooting up to #1 from #4 without explanation.
