With all the ongoing drama and sub plots between wrestlers, it is no surprise they seem to have a tendency to pop up in film. The history of wrestlers going into the film industry can be traced back to the 1950s and is still clearly prevalent today. In fact, so many wrestlers are still making the jump to the film industry that WWE has created their own production company, to help further wrestlers acting careers. Here are some upcoming movies starring some of your favorite wrestlers in 2018.

Blockers – John Cena

This was a highly rated film, averaging on 4 out of 5 stars. This movie is about 3 young women, Kayla (Geraldine Viswanathan), Sam (Gideon Adlon) and Julie (Kathryn Newton), who have been best friends since preschool. They ultimately decide to that they are going to lose their virginities on their prom night. The plan is set out until their parents find out and set out to prevent it from happening. The parents are Mitchell (John Cena), Hunter (Ike Barinholtz) and Lisa (Leslie Mann). Although this is ultimately a movie about sex, it does not objectify anyone in the film. It is well thought out and the performance by John Cena is excellent.

Skyscraper – Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who is known for his comedic roles, plays a completely different side of himself in this film. This a serious film in which the Rock plays a former FBI agent in this action-packed film. Skyscraper is directed by the same director that directed the action-comedy Central Intelligence.

Mohawk – Luke Harper

This is a revenge-based thriller, in which the Native American Mohawk tribe takes revenge on the British. This film gives clear and representative commentary on the genocide and displacement of the Native American people at the time. It also places a spotlight on the LGBT community as it focuses on a polyamorous relationship which Harpers character is involved in.

The Peanut Butter Falcon – Mick Foley and Jake Roberts

This film is actually about wrestling. It is essentially about a guy who has Down syndrome and dreams of becoming a professional wrestler. Foley’s character is someone who is passionate about backyard wrestling, while Roberts’ character is someone who never made it to professional wrestling and uses the backyard matches to essentially live out his dream.

Avengers of Justice: Farce Wars – Shawn Michaels

There are many parody films out there and this is just the newest one. This film is a parody of the DC and Marvel movies. Michaels’ character is called the ‘Incredibly Master Yoga’, a play on the name Yoda.

It is clear that WWE is becoming more popular and fitting into the mainstream, which is clear by the number of wrestlers who are going into the film industry. It seems pretty clear that the trend will continue and entertain audiences outside the wrestling ring.
