A “free agent” John Cena?

Former WWE champion John Cena is being marketed as a “free agent” as he returns to WWE television on the July 4 broadcast of Smackdown Live.

Cena, drafted to Smackdown during the WWE Draft last year, was not part of the Superstar Shake-up of this past April so everyone assumed that he remains part of the Smackdown roster. That assumption is now seemingly wrong as unlike everybody else, it looks like that Cena is free to show up on both Raw and Smackdown, at least for now.

John Cena has been off WWE television since WrestleMania 33 where he and his now-fiancee Nikki Bella defeated The Miz and Maryse. He then proposed to Nikki in front of 70,000+ fans at the Camping World Stadium.

Cena hosted the season premiere of American Grit last Sunday night on FOX, an episode which drew only 1.1 million viewers.
