It has been exactly 4,600 days – or 12 years, 7 months, and 3 days – since Goldberg last appeared inside a WWE ring. That day was WrestleMania XX inside Madison Square Garden where Goldberg stood face to face with Brock Lesnar for their not-so-epic match with Steve Austin as the guest referee.
Tonight, the former World Heavyweight champion returns to WWE on Raw and in a business where the motto is “never say never,” the man who pretty much for the past decade blasted WWE for all the things they have done, is expected to respond to Paul Heyman’s comments about a match against Brock Lesnar, kicking off his road to the Survivor Series.
The planned match between the two is being held now to coincide with the release of WWE 2K17. Brock Lesnar is the cover Superstar while Goldberg was the pre-order downloadable character offer. While Goldberg’s deal with the game was done solely through 2K, WWE had to okay the idea and just like what happened with Sting and The Ultimate Warrior, Goldberg found himself going from inside a video game to the reality of appearing in front of thousands of fans live on Raw.
The belief is that Goldberg has signed for this program only, one more match, and nothing else. That could obviously change with the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania getting closer. Goldberg has recently been expressing his desire to step back inside the ring so his son can see him wrestle live for the first time. Goldberg has multiple appearances planned for Raw leading up to the Survivor Series.
