Roman Reigns becomes the #1 contender for the WWE Universal title

Third time is the charm they say and WWE hopes that third Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns main event of 2018 will be just that when the two collide again at SummerSlam.

Reigns became the number one contender for the Universal title last night on Raw after he defeated Bobby Lashley with the Superman punch and a spear.

The whole idea over the past few months was to try and get Roman over while painting Lesnar as the guy who is leaving WWE without doing the time-honored tradition of dropping the title on the way out. The number one contender’s match was supposed to take place at Extreme Rules with a multi-man match but that was canceled when Lesnar “refused” to wrestle anyone because no one on the roster is of a box office success like him.

With the return to the UFC looming, Angle then gave Lesnar an ultimatum, show up on Raw, defend the title, or get stripped of it. Paul Heyman showed up on Raw and reluctantly agreed to Angle’s demand of a title shot at SummerSlam.

Lesnar has already defeated Reigns twice this year, at WrestleMania and in the cage match at the Greatest Royal Rumble.

The Universal champion will be on Monday Night Raw next week from Miami, his first time on the show since April and first time on WWE TV since the Greatest Royal Rumble.
