Stephanie McMahon hopeful to integrate more LGBT characters

During a speech at the Beyond Sport United event in New York on Tuesday, WWE’s Stephanie McMahon said that the company be including more LGBT characters into WWE programming in the future.

The Chief Brand Officer told NBC News after the event that she grew up knowing gay WWE Superstars and executives who worked for WWE and it’s always been accepted, “but now it’s about getting that message out there.”

McMahon mentioned that through their partnership with GLAAD, they have members of the organization come over and speak to the creative team to give them tutorials on sensitivities, the right words, the wrong words, and why those words matters.

“With their guidance and support, we will be able to portray that [LGBT storyline] appropriately. I do think there will be an opportunity to integrate some of those storylines in the near future,” she said.

So far there’s only one openly gay WWE Superstar on the roster, Darren Young, who came out publicly a few years ago.
