On this season finale of Total Bellas, the drama of the season all came to a head.
Just weeks before her upcoming wedding to John Cena, Nikki Bella decided to call off the wedding for the second time. When she first called off the wedding, Nikki had an extremely definite reason for doing so; her desire to be a mom and her fiancé’s unwillingness to contemplate the idea of fatherhood.
However, the second time around Nikki’s reason was much less concrete. She claims she needs some time to work on herself. However, wouldn’t you think that she would have done so before pressuring John into a proposal at WrestleMania 33? I mean the couple has been dating for seven years, it seems to me that Nikki has had ample time for self reflection.
Perhaps, I have been unfair in judging Nikki, however, maybe she has for so long had a fantasy of being married, that all of her energies have been focused on achieving that one goal, that she lost focus on taking care of herself. American society in general seems to place such an emphasis on marriage as a woman’s ultimate means to happiness that perhaps Nikki got caught up in reaching the goal that society says will lead to happiness that she had not placed enough thought on her own desires.
I do feel badly for John Cena, who has made a lot of sacrifices recently in order to please Nikki. The most notable of these is his decision to have children, because Nikki wanted to; even though he had no desire to have children himself, and had in fact that he was never going to have them.
Meanwhile, Nikki’s sister, Brie, and her husband Daniel Bryan received some exciting news from WWE doctors. Daniel Bryan has been unable to wrestle for the past couple of years due to a traumatic head injury. Daniel refused to give up on his dream of returning to the ring. He went to numerous specialists, and took tests, but he was cleared just in time to wrestle at WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans. Fittingly, four years earlier, Daniel Bryan won the WWE championship belt in the main event at WrestleMania 30.
Also, while they were in New Orleans for WrestleMania Brie and Daniel celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary, which was rudely interrupted by Nikki calling to inform her sister of her canceled engagement. In the end of the episode Brie and Nikki went to California beaches in order to toast the new Nikki. Let’s hope the new Nikki brings the drama to the next season of Total Bellas!
